11. UNITED KINGDOM II: Vulnerable – Bring Out Your Dead

“Bring Out Your Dead”
Performed by: Vulnerable
Music by: Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner & Andrew Donaldson
Lyrics by: Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner & Andrew Donaldson

Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner and Andrew Donaldson are Vulnerable – a “bedroom band” back when they were teenagers in north-east England, now making their music via online collaboration and occasional meetups in Edinburgh for marathon vocal recording sessions.

In their own words:
A lot of our new music is inspired by the fact that we all recently turned 40, as well as the less-than-perfect state of the world right now. It’s all a bit doom and gloom, in other words.

But the only way to stay sane is to meet these things with a dark sense of humour. So here’s our HCSC 2019 entry, complete with a title taken from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, trumpet samples inspired by 90s computer game Theme Hospital, keyboards warped to sound like distorted guitars, clanging church bells… oh, and a choir of kazoos. Come and embrace the doom with us!

Lyrics:
Bring out your dead
Bring out your dead
Wring out the dreams that brought us here
Ring out the bells

I know these feelings – they are deep within me now
I’ve heard it all before, but it gets me here somehow
I know that I’m not coming over any more
I know this feeling – it’s all gone

Bring out your dead
Bring out your dead
Wring out the dreams that brought us here
Ring out the bells

I thought that I was knocking at an open door
I feel cheated by the dreams that led me on
Life’s a footprint left upon a sandy shore
Here comes the tide and it’s all gone

Bring out your dead
Bring out your dead
Wring out the dreams that brought us here
Ring out the bells

I know
And I know that you know that I know
So why are we doing this?

Bring out your dead
Bring out your dead
Wring out the dreams that brought us here
Ring out the bells
