“Quiet”
Performed by: Martin Kahnberg
Music by: Martin Kahnberg
Lyrics by: Martin Kahnberg

Martin Kahnberg first entered HCSC in 2004 and has a consecutive run of entries dating back to 2013. Welcome to the competition again, Martin!

In his own words:
I’m nowadays an old man working as a choir conductor and composing music on my spare time. Most of the time I arrange songs for choirs or work on my life project of writing a musical, but now and then I find the inspiration to write something slightly less complicated.

The inspiration this time was a friend saying that he liked to be happy after listening to a song, and my first thought was that I usually wouldn’t want the song to change my overall feeling at all… So I wrote a song about one of the most saddening things I could think of – a war where the combatants completely eradicate each other, leaving only ruins and destruction where there used to be life. If you would ever see such a place, you would most likely be very sad – but that sadness might give birth to a determination, urging you to make sure things like that won’t happen.

Everything isn’t lost – yet!

Lyrics:
The world is quiet,
All the sounds are gone.
The battle is over,
No one has won.

The battlefield is calm,
No one moves or stirs.
The birds are yet to arrive.

The world is quiet,
All the sounds are gone.
The battle is over,
No one has won.

They fought in vain,
They all killed each other.
Now they’re all gone from this world.

The world is quiet,
All the sounds are gone.
The battle is over,
No one has won.

What’s the point of fighting
For something that isn’t yours to take?
Let yourself grow in friendship and understanding
And learn to respect the gifts of others!
Fight your envy, fight your greed!
Let the earth remain a world of beauty!

The world is quiet,
All the sounds are gone.
The battle is over,
No one has won.

The villages are empty.
The towns are dead.
They ruined all that they had.

The world is quiet,
All the sounds are gone.
The battle is over,
No one has won.
