11. UNITED KINGDOM II: Cellphone – Just Wasn’t Meant To Be

“Just Wasn’t Meant To Be”
Performed by: Cellphone
Music by: Jim Brook
Lyrics by: Jim Brook

Flying solo for the first time this year is regular entrant Jim Brook – all the best for the 2018 edition!

In his own words:
Hi! I’m Jim Brook from London and this is my fifth participation in the HCSC, the previous four times being with my songwriting partner Andy Mendelson as one half of Jimmy Andrews’ Midlife Crisis.

This year I am entering solo under a new name: Cellphone. I’ve chosen this name because my mobile phone plays such a big part in my songwriting. Firstly, it is where I store any little ideas that come to me, in the hope that some of them will turn into songs one day. And if songs do emerge, my phone becomes my “recording studio”. With no formal musical training or technical knowledge, the songs I sing live into my phone are very raw, reflecting simply what I can produce with one voice and one guitar.

“Just Wasn’t Meant To Be” is also a live recording. It’s a break-up song that talks of pain and regret – haven’t we all been there? – but it also hints at a brighter future, that things might be better apart. I hope you like my song, and I wish the best of luck to all the participants in HCSC 2018.

Lyrics:
If there be love, I hope it finds you;
Eyes fixed ahead, don’t look behind you.
The future’s yours, don’t forget it;
The future’s yours, go get it.

We sailed away on a Ship of Good Intentions.
We came so close to the Land of Comprehension.
We rode the waves on a dark and stormy sea,
But it just wasn’t meant to be.

If there be love, I hope it finds you;
Eyes fixed ahead, don’t look behind you.
The future’s yours, don’t forget it;
The future’s yours, go get it.

Our world was strange and the pain was never-ending.
Afraid to change, we just kept on pretending.
We closed our eyes so we wouldn’t have to see
That it just wasn’t meant to be.

And though our love ran so deep,
It just wasn’t meant to be.
