15. GERMANY IV: Úna – I Don’t Really Care

“I Don’t Really Care”
Performed by: Úna
Music by: Howard Atkinson
Lyrics by: Howard Atkinson

Our final German entry could easily have been a UK entry, but Howard didn’t mind which country we chose, so we went with his long-standing home. Welcome and Willkommen!

In his own words:
My name is Howard Atkinson. I was born in the UK and have been teaching English at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany, for over 20 years. I now have dual British/German citizenship.

I have been a massive Eurovision fan ever since I set eyes on Clodagh Rodgers’ pink hotpants back in 1971. I am not blind to Eurovision’s failings, but I still love it for its tradition and cultural/musical diversity – and of course for the many wonderful songs and performances that have graced the Eurovision stage over the years. My all-time top 10 tends to vary according to my mood, but the following are more-or-less permanent fixtures: Den Vilda, Rapsodia, Kedvesem, Amar Pelos Dois, Vi Maler Byen Rød and L’Amour, Ca Fait Chanter La Vie. It may not be a coincidence that these are all native-language entries.

I occasionally feel the urge to turn my hand to songwriting and lyrics (including some decidedly dodgy alternative lyrics to a number of Euro classics!), and I wrote I Don’t Really Care back in 2001. I never submitted it for a competition, but I thought that it perhaps deserved finally to see the light of day. I am a big fan of Dusty Springfield and other female singers of the 1960s, and you may just discern a hint of that in the recording.

The singer is my friend Úna, whom I have known since we performed together as students in Manchester in the 1980s. She is now married with two children and works as a dentist. The less said about my vocal and thespian efforts the better, but I hope people will agree that she is very good!

Lyrics:
I don’t really care if you are seeing someone new
I don’t care if you say they mean everything to you
‘Cause I still have the memory of the love that we once knew
The truth is in your eyes

The first time that I saw you
You took my breath away
(Yes, it’s true)
Now when I see you in my mind’s eye
You look the way you did that day
I still love you

So say you never loved me, I’ll pretend I haven’t heard
Tell me you don’t miss me, you must know that sounds absurd
I don‘t really care because I don’t believe a word
The truth is in your eyes

When the dawn breaks through my window
My thoughts still turn to you
When I’m watching some old movie
I still cry like we used to do
And I know you must feel that way, too

So baby…..
I don’t really care if you are seeing someone new
I don’t care if you say they mean everything to you
‘Cause I still have the memory of the love that we once knew
The truth is in your eyes

So say you never loved me, I’ll pretend I haven’t heard
Tell me you don’t miss me, you must know that sounds absurd
I don’t really care because I don’t believe a word
The truth is in your eyes
(The truth is in your eyes)
