16. UNITED KINGDOM III: Vulnerable – Leviathan

“Leviathan”
Performed by: Vulnerable
Music by: Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner & Andrew Donaldson
Lyrics by: Ray Holt

Martin Faulkner has been entering HCSC with his various musical projects since the very earliest days of the competition, and his band Vulnerable are back for another bite of the cherry in 2018!

In their own words:
Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner and Andrew Donaldson have been making music together since they were at school in Newcastle upon Tyne in the mid-1990s. After several projects – some serious, some not so serious – they settled on the name Vulnerable and have self-published a string of albums and EPs ever since, as well as participating in the Home Composed Song Contest every year (of course!).

Lyricist and lead singer Ray explains the inspiration behind their 2018 entry:

“The song takes its name from the book on statecraft by Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes viewed the natural state of things as a brutal ‘war of all against all’ which could only be overcome through the strong leadership of an absolute ruler. It was written during the English Civil War, when you can see why absolutism might appear preferable to chaos. It seemed to reflect well on the current state of modern politics.”

Lyrics:
We need a leader, not an egotist
Not some thin-skinned hate evangelist
Read Leviathan, grow obsessed with it
A lifeline that kills those who cling to it

What makes you think he won’t put you against the wall?
Do you think you’re too special to take the fall?

He’s benevolent? Pull the other one
Prepare yourself for pandemonium
Cast your doubt aside, cheer the wealth divide
Doomed through good intent then let it all collide

What makes you think he won’t put you against the wall?
Do you think you’re too special to take the fall?

Now my misery is complete
Now my misery is complete
And I’m never going to find a lifeline to get out of this one

We need a leader, not an egotist
Not some hysteric evangelist
Bang the protest drum, call your critics blind
When it all goes wrong, call your failures mine

What makes you think he won’t put you against the wall?
Do you think you’re too special to take the fall?
