11. UNITED KINGDOM 3: Vulnerable -“Honey, Let’s Hurt Someone”

“Honey, Let’s Hurt Someone”

Performed by: Vulnerable
Music by: Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner & Andrew Donaldson
Lyrics by: Ray Holt, Martin Faulkner & Andrew Donaldson

Vulnerable have been making a racket since 2000. Ray, Martin and Andrew met at school in Newcastle upon Tyne several years previously and played together in various sensible and silly bands before settling on the Vulnerable line-up. They now live in various cities around the UK and make their music collaboratively online, meeting up to record vocals once a year (global pandemics allowing).

“Honey, Let’s Hurt Someone” is a love song… more or less. “It’s about that all-powerful feeling you get from a relationship that makes you feel completely invulnerable – just you and me against the world,” says the band.

They wanted to create a simple three-minute pop song with more of an organic feel than usual, inspired by bands such as the Decemberists. “Although we couldn’t resist throwing in some electronic vocal treatments too,” they add. “Our lovely friend Laurence Wilson also helped us out on drums.”

The band Vulnerable has participated in the HCSC many times before. Their first entry in the contest was already in 2001. Welcome back and good luck!

Lyrics:

The way your eyes shine
Through the smoke from your cigarette
Your smile when we share a joke
That no one but us would get

Honey…
Let’s hurt someone
Honey…
Let’s hurt someone

The times when you dance for me
Skin so flushed as you twirl
But when it comes to everyone else
There’s more kindness in the insect world

Honey…
Let’s hurt someone
Honey…
Let’s hurt someone

Make up for our shortfalls
We can amplify their silence
Lash out at those around us
Let’s drown ourselves in violence (violence)

Honey…
Let’s hurt someone
Honey…
Let’s hurt someone

Honey…
Let’s hurt someone
Honey…
Let’s hurt someone
