4. AUSTRALIA: Rainbow Orbit -“Fat Boy”

“Fat Boy”

Performed by: Rainbow Orbit
Music by: Phil McNulty
Lyrics by: Phil McNulty

Phil started writing music when he entered University and started using his voice. This song is very personal for Phil. It tells us about entering the social world as an adult and that might be a little overwhelming.

“This is a song, apologising to my young self, for what I did to him,” says Phil, thinking about times when he was not so engaged in social activities.

Phil entered his first song in the competition 2018, so welcome back and good luck!

Lyrics:

That was me: the awkward, freckled fat boy,
Except I wasn’t everything I thought I was, it’s just what I perceived.
Standing in the shadows, awaiting liberty.
Never thought to ask for love, I just wanted to be… worthy.

I gave myself away, a thousand times or maybe more.
I never found an answer, in revolving doors.
Was too far, I didn’t drink and party like the cool ones.
I dyed the orange out and tried to hide my tears.

I’m sorry, dearest fat boy. I never could protect you from the world you fell into.
I took on all the barbs.
I let them all manipulate the way I felt for you.

I’m looking in the mirror,
see the way that years have eaten into everything that might have been.
I still ache, but nothing can reverse time.
Nothing takes away the throbbing heartbeat of that lonely boy who wanted to be…
Worthy

I’m sorry, dearest fat boy. I never could protect you from the world you fell into.
I took on all the barbs.
I let them all manipulate the way I felt for you.
I never will forget, sitting in the thunderstorm and wishing it would end.
I still feel low sometimes. I hope I made you proud. Somehow.
