Contest overview

1993 winner Bengt Carlvik was due to organise the 1994 Home Composed Song Contest; indeed, he sent out entry forms and received the entries, but personal problems meant that he was forced to hand over the organisation to Morten Boldt Hansen from Denmark. In the wake of this inevitable delay, the 1994 contest was not fully concluded until early 1995.

There was some turnover of composers this year. Of course, Bengt Carlvik himself did not enter, and Y. Sapir from Israel also said goodbye to the competition. Meanwhile, Michael Constantinides from Cyprus and Martin Faulkner from the United Kingdom made their debuts - the latter posing a problem of nomenclature which was resolved geographically, the U.K. being subdivided into "North" and "South" for the purpose of the competition. The issue of how exactly to refer to multiple entries from the same country would persist for some years.

Despite the churn on the participant side of things, the number of entries remained the same: ten songs went into battle, seven of them with lyrics this time.

The voting was evenly spread, with no song receiving more than one maximum score. In the end, it was first-time entrants Cyprus who took a tight victory - and for the third year in succession, the same entrant claimed both first and second place. A 15-year-old Michael Hadjiyiannis (as his name was transliterated for the purpose of the competition) would have no cause to dwell on his second place for too long, though - his career was destined to go far beyond the Home Composed arena...
