Contest overview

Roy Vorland from Norway, who had won in 1997, declined to organise or take part in the 1998 contest. Naturally, an organiser had to be found, and T.O. from Grindsted in Denmark stepped into the fray for a second successive year - though once more, he himself did not participate in the competition.

The number of participants was down slightly on the previous year, but with no withdrawals or disqualifications this time, the final scoreboard featured 12 songs from seven composers in five different countries. Germany made its debut in the event courtesy of Michael Bauer, while Christina Irving arrived to swell the ranks of the British entrants; otherwise, all of the participants had previous Home Composed experience.

In contrast to the previous year, the voting proceeded very smoothly. Despite a spirited challenge from Israel's Alon Shanni, recording easily his best result in the competition to date, Morten Boldt Hansen pulled away right at the end to claim his second Home Composed victory - and Denmark's third in total, following his debut success in 1991 and T.O.'s win in 1996.
