Jedes Mal, wenn ich Kinder dort spielen sehe
kommt die Erinnerung zurück an den alten Steg
Im Schlauchboot fuhren wir den kleinen Fluss hinab
mit Fernrohr, Ruder und Proviant bepackt
Wir haben fremde Länder entdeckt
uns vor den Soldaten des Königs versteckt
Und manchmal suche ich die Gelegenheit
zurückzukehren in jene Zeit

Ich wäre gerne noch mal ein Pirat
furchtlos ohne Angst und auf großer Fahrt
Mit einem guten Freund als Steuermann
mit dem man Abenteuer bestehen kann
Noch einmal Segel setzen, das wünsch‘ ich mir
die raue Seeluft in der Nase spüren
Manchen Sturm gemeinsam überstehen
niemals in Ketten untergehen

Die Erinnerung bringt es zurück
jedes Jahr, jeden Tag, Stück für Stück
Die Piraten von damals jetzt erwachsen sind
unter neuer Flagge und mit Frau und Kind
Jeder mit Blut besiegelte Schwur
ist nicht vergessen, gut versteckt ist er nur
Denn sticht das Schiff noch einmal in See
werden wir alle an der Reeling stehen

Setzt die Segel, Freunde, und die Leinen los
vorbei an jedem Riff, hinein ins Abendrot
In jedem Hafen, an dem wir vor Anker gehen
wartet eine Gefahr, die wir überstehen
Ich wäre gerne noch mal ein Pirat
der die Angst nicht kennt, bis ins Seemannsgrab
Auf der Suche nach dem Schatz der Vergangenheit
heute weiß ich, dass er Erinnerung heißt

I start to remember the old landing stage
In our rubber dinghy we used to sail down the little river
With a telescope, oars and rations for the journey
We discovered strange new lands
Hid from the King’s soldiers
And sometimes, now, I look for a chance
To step back into those days

I wish I could be a pirate again
Fearless and brave, on a great journey
With a good friend beside me at the helm
Together we’d come through every adventure
I wish I could set sail once again
Feel the bracing sea air against my skin
Survive any storms, side by side
And never go down in chains

My memory brings it all flooding back
Every year, every day, bit by bit
The pirates from back then are adults now
Sailing under a new flag with wife and children
But none of those oaths forged in blood
Is forgotten, they just lie well hidden
And when the boat goes to sea once again
We’ll all be standing at the railing

Set the sails, my friends, and cast away from shore
Past every reef and off into the sunset
In every harbour where we drop anchor
There waits a danger that we will overcome
I wish I could be a pirate again
Knowing no fear until my burial at sea
On the search for the treasure of the past
